Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
