Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
